ARE CERTAIN SEAWEEDS MORE APPEALING TO EAT?
Alyssa has been looking at feeding patterns of marine herbivores to see if they prefer to eat different types of seaweed. She will be looking at over 30 different types of seaweed (red, brown, and green) found in different regions (polar, temperate, tropical) and comparing how animals in our marsh eat foreign seaweeds versus local seaweed found here in our marsh.
Alyssa will also be looking at the chemistry and DNA of these different types of seaweeds to make observations and comparisons. The goal is to have an idea as to which kinds of seaweeds are more appealing to eat and why. Having a pleasant or agreeable taste is called palatability. Alyssa will be looking to see if certain traits link to palatability.
