moon snails!

It was a beautiful day to sample this past Monday. While out in the field, we spotted a live moon snail! 

Moon snails  are predatory sea snails. They prey mostly on bivalves like clams, but they will also eat almost any other shelled mollusk they encounter, including other moon snails! 

Have you ever seen a shell on the beach with a perfect hole in? Great for making necklaces right? Believe it or not those holes are created by moon snails! Moon snails will drill holes through shells using its radula (kind of like a tongue) and secreting acids.
